Words matter, but actions render the verdict.

Chapter 17: Shut Up and Show Me!

Perhaps it goes without saying… but I’ll say it anyway. It’s pretty tough to lie if you just shut up!

Much easier to lie with our words than with our actions.  Requires a lot more time and effort to be untruthful with our deeds; a deeper level of premeditated deceit – thankfully, not worth the effort for most of us.

Words matter, but actions render the verdict.

Winifred understands this, perhaps better than humans. Something we have lost sight of with email, texting, Facebook, twitter… It’s words. Words. WORDS!

And yet, what truly shapes my relationship with Winifred are my actions. For Winifred, the old cliche, actions speak louder than words, ought to be tattooed on the inside of my eyeballs – a bit unsettling since I talk to her a lot.

I am not alone in this defect. No matter that our actions reveal the truth or lie of our words, most of us just keep talking. We rant and they listen.

Jerome K Jerome had it right: “Dogs never talk about themselves, but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up the appearance of being interested in the conversation.”

I know Winifred would love to tell me, shut up and show me! For while I believe she appreciates my loving words, she cares more about what I do. The question then becomes: Do my human relationships deserve any less?

Of course, this is a false equivalency.  There is a big difference.  Humans fully understand my words. Winnie understands how I perform.

Humans, take note.
